Per barrel oil price history

Prices are based on historical free market (stripper) oil prices of Illinois Crude as presented by Illinois Oil and Gas Association and Plains All American Oil. Typically Illinois Crude is a couple of dollars cheaper per barrel than West Texas Intermediate (WTI) because it requires a bit more refining. Prices ranged between $2.50 and $3.00 a barrel until 1970. That's $17 to $19 a barrel when adjusted for inflation. The U.S. was the world's dominant oil producer at that time. It regulated prices. Domestic oil was plentiful.
